Few sportspeople have risen from such humble beginnings to reach the pinnacle of their profession, but one man has done it and more: he has made his countrymen take cricket seriously, he has become the richest cricketer in the world, he has led his team to two World Cup victories, and he has captained India to the top of the Test rankings. Yet when he retired after the 2015 World Cup final, few outside India had heard of him.

    • Early life and background

MS Dhoni, born on 7 July 1981 in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India, is one of the greatest cricketers the world has ever seen. He had a humble background and was raised in a middle-class family. His father, Pan Singh, was a worker at MECON Limited and his mother, Devaki Devi, was a housewife.

Dhoni started playing cricket as a hobby at a young age. He joined a local cricket club called the Commando Cricket Club and played with them regularly. It was during this time that he developed his cricketing skills and made a name for himself in the local tournaments.

Dhoni was selected for the Bihar U-19 team and then moved on to play for the Bengal U-19 team. His performance in the U-19 team attracted the attention of selector Keshav Banerjee and he was selected for the India Cement Team in 2000.

In 2003, Dhoni made his Ranji Trophy debut and was selected for the Indian A squad that toured Kenya and Zimbabwe. This tour proved to be very successful for him and he soon earned a place in the Indian ODI squad.

In 2004, Dhoni made his ODI debut against Bangladesh and scored an unbeaten 30 off 24 balls.
