    Understanding gum disease: The 101-guide for your help

    Many people ignore the early signs of gum disease. If you have swollen gums or have noticed bleeding while brushing and flossing, you must see a dentist immediately.     What causes gum disease?

If the condition has advanced, you may see receding gums, which may eventually lead to tooth loss. Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gum disease, where the inflammation has reached the periodontium. Common signs also include loose teeth, chronic bad breath, and sensitivity while eating and drinking.

    What is the treatment for gum disease?

    Gingivitis doesn’t require extensive treatment plans. You have to focus on your dental hygiene practice and must go for professional cleanings as recommended by your dentist. Gingivitis is reversible in most cases. If you have periodontitis, you will need to follow the standard treatments for gingivitis along with mouthwash. Your dentist may also recommend antibiotics, which will help minimize the infection. Periodontal treatment also includes frequent in-clinic cleanings.

    Things to know

    Just because you have been diagnosed with gum disease doesn’t mean you will lose your teeth. There are simple ways to counter the symptoms, and as long as you keep up with your brushing & flossing routine, you can minimize future concerns. Your dentist may suggest certain dental care products that will help counter bad breath and help with signs of gingivitis. If you already have loose teeth, there are treatment options to consider, depending on the extent of the condition.
