Many people ignore the early signs of gum disease. If you have swollen gums or have noticed bleeding while brushing and flossing, you must see a dentist immediately. It is also common to have no symptoms at all, which is regular dental appointments are so important. Consider visiting a Powell, TN dental office to understand more about better dental care. The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. In this post, we will discuss more about gingivitis and periodontitis in detail.

    What causes gum disease?

Bacteria inside your mouth can cause inflammation of the gums and lead to plaque and gum disease. If you have no symptoms or have minor inflammation, you probably don’t have much to worry about, although you should still consult your dentist about the best ways to treat the condition. The good news is gum disease is preventable with proper oral care.

What are the signs of gum disease?

If you have a milder form of gum disease, also called gingivitis, you may witness bleeding while brushing. There can be evident swelling and inflammation of the gums. If the condition has advanced, you may see receding gums, which may eventually lead to tooth loss. Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gum disease, where the inflammation has reached the periodontium. Common signs also include loose teeth, chronic bad breath, and sensitivity while eating and drinking.

What is the treatment for gum disease?

Gingivitis doesn’t require extensive treatment plans. You have to focus on your dental hygiene practice and must go for professional cleanings as recommended by your dentist. Gingivitis is reversible in most cases. If you have periodontitis, you will need to follow the standard treatments for gingivitis along with mouthwash. Your dentist may also recommend antibiotics, which will help minimize the infection. Periodontal treatment also includes frequent in-clinic cleanings.

    Things to know

Just because you have been diagnosed with gum disease doesn’t mean you will lose your teeth. There are simple ways to counter the symptoms, and as long as you keep up with your brushing & flossing routine, you can minimize future concerns. Your dentist may suggest certain dental care products that will help counter bad breath and help with signs of gingivitis. If you already have loose teeth, there are treatment options to consider, depending on the extent of the condition.

Call your dentist if you have persistent bad breath or other symptoms listed above.
