The Ford Explorer
From 2011 to 2018 the Ford Explorer won first prize in its category for full-size crossovers every year. Owners and drivers on the CarGurus site granted it 4.8/5 stars.
The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration tested this vehicle in every model year, and from 2013 to 2018 the Explorer earned five out of five for both crashworthiness and survivability.
The Jeep Wrangler
From 2007 to 2017 the Jeep Wrangler won a number of awards in the midsize crossovers category. The 2010 edition of the Jeep Wrangler did exceptionally well with the NHTSA testing program, earning five stars out of a possible five in safety ratings for both the driver and the front passenger.
The Toyota Tacoma
Toyota has a well-deserved reputation for reliability and safety, but the 2005 to 2015 models of this midsize truck won all kinds of recognition for its combination of thrift and luxury. The NHTSA tested the Tacoma and awarded it a solid four stars out of a possible five for overall safety.
The Ford F-150
Although the Ford F-150 is a venerable model, in regular production for decades now, the Ford Corporation made major changes to it in recent years.
This included using a lighter, stronger body made from aluminum. This did not hurt it at all in its NHTSA ratings — from 2015 to 2017 the Ford F-150 won five stars out of five for overall safety and did impressively well in the individual categories.
CarGurus also awarded it the first place among full-size trucks. In 2015 the F-150 scored the highest, winning an aggregate of 8.8 points out of 10.
